An
affirmation is a precise personal statement written in
the present tense. These are different from positive statements.
You CAN change any area of your life using affirmations.
However, they must be realistic, achievable goals, that
you want to change. If you're over fifty and haven't had
any training in the space program, writing an affirmation
such as, "I enjoy flying to the moon," would
be an unrealistic affirmation. Now, if you're younger
and really have an interest in space, you can write an
affirmation that is realistic such as, "I enjoy working
in the area of space travel."
The
goal of an affirmation is to change your subconscious.
Anxiety and panic feed on whatever our subconscious tells
us. By working on affirmations, you are changing your
negative thoughts, therefore stopping your anticipatory
anxiety. It's anticipatory anxiety that starts the anxiety,
panic cycle.
Here
are the basic instructions on how to do affirmations:
-
They are to be handwritten, 15 times, once a day,
for 21 consecutive days. If you miss a day, you have
to restart from day one. A day starts from the time
you get up for the day until you go to bed for the
night. It isn't from midnight to midnight.
-
It
should be written in a personal form = "I"
statements.
-
It
must contain only positive words.
-
It
must not have any comparison to others.
-
It
must be as accurate as you can make it. In other words,
narrow it down or break it into steps. Example:
If you want to conquer a fear of flying, don't do
"I am a fearless flier." This might work,
but if you can narrow it down to a specific problem,
you will have a better result. Example: Instead
try, "I am comfortable on a plane."
