Everybody
feels anxiety from time to time -
perhaps when giving a speech, facing a job
interview, or driving when conditions are bad.
Most of the time, such anxiety is useful, because
it increases awareness and gets your body ready
for action.
But
for a large number of people (approximately
8 percent of all Americans and the number is
growing), anxiety becomes an overwhelming
condition that produces prolonged worry or even
intense fear without apparent cause, which may
impair their social and work functioning. These
people have an illness, an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety
disorders are a cause of tremendous
suffering in the United States. Victims often feel
they must endure their fears without complaint
or risk having others think they are weak or
unbalanced. Often they themselves don't know
what the real source of their suffering is. Members
of their family may be confused too.
This
web site may help you or someone you know
to understand more about anxiety disorders and
what to do about them. Some of the major types
of anxiety are:
- Generalized
Anxiety Disorder
- Panic
Disorder
- Phobias
- Post
